Hammertoes

What are hammertoes?

Hammertoes areva foot condition that causes one or more toes to bend downward at the middle joint, creating a hammer-like appearance. The affected toe may become rigid and painful, especially when wearing shoes, and in severe cases, the toe can become permanently bent. Hammertoes typically affect the second, third, or fourth toes and can be caused by an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally straighten the toes. This type of foot deformity can be genetic or caused by certain disease processes. Certain types of shoe gear or trauma can also lead to hammertoe deformity.

Deciding the appropriate hammertoe conservative treatment or surgery is important as not all hammertoes are the same and not all procedures address hammertoes in the same way. Ultimately the correct procedure depends on your clinical exam, x-rays as well as what your activity level, health factors and goals are. If you are concerned that you may be suffering from hammertoes please request an appointment at Bigfoot Podiatry or give us a call to schedule.
